Greatest Hits of 2011

2011 was pretty great! I definitely didn't blog as much as I wanted to, but oh well! Here's a few of our favorite mems for the year (and I have to say, I think March was my fave!)!

January
  • Marta came to visit Greenville for the second time in 3 months! We celebrated New Years with friends and Justin's brothers - one of the best I have ever had!
  • Our little man, Romeo, turned 2 years old.
  • I had to rush Justin to the Emergency Room for severe stomach pains. The ER was a total nightmare and we still don't know what in the world happened.

February
  • I threw my first “hired” party! Our good friend, Josh, asked me to design a party for his wife, Theresea's, birthday. She loves pigs so much, so I went with a pig-inspired theme. She was so surprised!

March

April
  • We traveled to Virginia to see Justin's brother, extended family and his immediate fam, who drove down from Wisconsin. We had an packed weekend, including juggling our 2 pups and catching up with relatives we hadn't seen in a long time!

May
  • We celebrated Easter by hosting a colorful, little lunch party with Justin's bros. Unfortunately, Justin was super sick and missed out.
  • Justin had to have an unexpected surgery, and was hospitalized for 5 days. Not a fun memory.
  • Jody and I hosted a fun oriental-inspired cookout. The food was to DIE for.
  • We saw Sleigh Bells in Asheville and ran into our friends, Gina & Curtis. Incredible show.
  • We finally told our friends that we were planning to move. Wow, it was definitely more difficult than I imagined.
  • I hosted a small Mexican dinner party for our close friends. Dinner was awesome, until towards the end - Romeo decided to have massive, explosive diarrhea.

June
  • We said 'goodbye' to many of our dear friends - including our Shepherding Group - which we were welcomed by a gorgeous farewell party on our last night with the group
  • We threw our own farewell party and an emotional last few nights in Greenville
  • We endured a handful of days of nonstop packing for the big move. Cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning with my sister, her fiance (now hubby) and our closest friends
  • We moved from South Carolina to Minnesota, journeying with 2 vehicles, a giant moving truck and 2 very needy pups
  • Summer began and we lived it up before finally finding some jobs.. We saw Foster the People, late nights watching movies, hottubbing, a Father's Day Jazz Party and silly memories at the Drive-In
  • I began freelancing for Chanel again! It felt so good to be back with my all-time favorite cosmetic line
  • My good friend, Jade, got married! I was honored to be a part of her big day as her Personal Attendant

July
  • We rocked out with my parents at a Black Keys show - our birthday gifts from them
  • Celebrated the 4th watching fireworks overlooking our beautiful MN Boat Club venue where we had our MN Wedding Reception in 2008
  • My friend, Ash, offered me a free ticket to see Britney Spears live! We had fantastic seats and sang our little hearts out!
  • I hosted (with some help from Jade!) a garden-inspired baby shower for my good friend, Mulder and her unborn twins. The whole experience was insane and amazing at the same time! {Photos}
  • Our planned "family camping trip" quickly shifted to an indoor weekend after some rough weather {Photos}

August
  • Vanessa and I hosted a Cuban-inspired bachelorette/bridal shower dinner party for our little sister, Lanae. All the work put into it was so worth it! {Photos}
  • I designed and helped host a second bridal shower for Lanae, inspired by lemons
  • I was offered a job as the Business Manager for the Minneapolis Macy's Chanel counter.. Definitely one of my dream jobs (aside from my career in therapy)
  • After couple years, we finally were able to go to the MN State Fair and stuff our faces with handfuls of greasy food

September
  • My dear high school friend, Laura, got hitched - I was honored to do makeup and be a part of her special day! On the same day, in all of the craziness, Coco went into her first heat. Talk about bad timing..
  • Mulder finally had her babies! I finally met them despite all of the chaos with my new job, and we celebrated her birthday
  • My little sister got married! I was honored to do almost all of the decor for the wedding/reception And yes, I cried like a little baby.

October

November
  • We celebrated a Gold + Aqua Thanksgiving with my family for the first time ever. I threw the party decor together on a budget of $2.99! We girls laughed our heads off as we rushed around, serving food and maneuvered through the messiest kitchen in the world!
  • I left my job at Macy's for an incredible opportunity to work in therapy again (plus, paid grad school tuition!)

December
  • I publicized my new Starter Site "alannaandes.com", kicking off my plans to create a business in party design and planning
  • Lanae (my sister) and her hubby got a new pup! Little Bernie is the cutest little Boston!
  • I started my new job at the MN Autism Center School - So far, I love it!
  • I helped my mom throw an Italian-inspired Christmas dinner party on Christmas Eve! It was such a fabulous night and the food was delish!
  • We traveled to Wisconsin to celebrate a belated Christmas with Justin's family and ring in the New Year in Galena with Marta & Justin's brothers!
  • Our little peanut, Coco Chanel turned 1 year old! I love her to pieces and I really can't believe how big she is!

Dear Heart, Don't Stop Fighting.. Prepare, Ride the Lightning

Lots of things have happened in the past several weeks..

Work has been OK but stressful.. Every year around this time, I face the fear of losing my job, as a result of job cuts and downsizing. I can only trust that God has something great planned for me, whether it's this job (that I love) or something else, somewhere else.

I'm coming up on my 4-year anniversary of living in South Carolina. So crazy! Has time really gone that fast? It feels like just a few months ago, Justin was helping me pack my car to the brim and head down to warmer weather. Since then, we've been married and seen friends get married, we've made new friends, we've gone through the excitement of babies being born and soon-to-be born, we've had a ridiculous amount of parties and beach trips.. Oh, and speaking of weddings and babies? Eeee! I'm so excited for my friends! I can't wait!! More excitement on some big news later (and no, I'm not preggo).

Justin and I had the sweetest Valentine's Day. We made our usual reservation at P.F. Chang's and dinner was delish (as always) and our server was really cool. The only downside to the whole evening? If you've ever been to P.F. Chang's (or at least the one in Greenville), there is some good seating and some blah seating. We knew it would be too much to ask for a booth, so we followed the hostess to our table against the wall (half booth/half chairs). The wall-side tables are spaced really close.. almost too close. Everything was great and lovely until a really awkward couple was seated right beside us. The guy actually looked like he might be her dad and the girl had crusty hair and was dressed like she was getting ready to host a Garage Sale. They stared at us for most of the evening, which was ignorable. The part we had a hard time ignoring was every single time Flannel Girl hacked up phlegm and made gurgling sounds as we were eating our fantastic Lettuce Wraps and Crab Wontons. C'monnn! Besides the gagging and gurgling, the couple didn't even interact! They were on their phones the whole time. Happy Valentine's Day, weirdos!

We agreed not to exchange gifts this year, but of course Justin broke the agreement. We even had the discussion a few weeks ago: "So, babe.. 'no gifts' this year really means 'no gifts', right? It's not the kinda thing when we say 'no gifts' but then you go and get something anyway, is it?" Riiighht. Well, I sure felt like a loser when Monday rolled around, and my husband surprised me with beautiful flowers, a cute card, chocolates and a little gift bag for me. What?? Cheater! I couldn't believe it.

Me & My Valentine..
His "Lil' Monster Valentine" card cracked me up!
Pretty Daffodils & Irises
The first time I've ever received boxed chocolates!
Although I didn't get him an actual gift, I did cheat a little myself. After my client cancelled for Monday afternoon, I chose not to tell Justin. Instead, I planned to clean the apartment like a crazy-woman and bake some yummy things for him. I made one of his favorite desserts from when he was a kid - Funny Cake, and a new dessert that I haven't had a chance to make yet. It's called "Better-Than-Sex-Cake".. The name is a little risqué, but the cake is flippin' amazing. We spent the rest of the night rotting our teeth and watching movies. Man, I love Valentine's Day.

The recipe came from my Aunt Sheree.. I can't believe I haven't made it before! It's SO EASY!

Better-Than-Sex Cake
1 box chocolate cake mix (I used a fudge cake recipe)
1 jar butterscotch/caramel ice cream topping
1 (8oz) Cool Whip
2-3 crushed Butterfingers

Bake cake according to box (I used 2 springform pans and when they cooled, I stacked them with a super-thin layer of chocolate frosting between). After the cake has cooled, poke several holes in the cake with the handle of a wooden or plastic spoon. Drizzle butterscotch/caramel topping over cake, making sure it flows into poked holes. Frost with Cool Whip and sprinkle with crushed Butterfingers.

Other than working and baking (ha!) I have been planning quite a few parties! I have a Rockstar Birthday Party coming up at the end of this month that I'm helping with, as well as a bridal shower, a birthday party and a baby shower for the month of March. Am I crazy?! Either way, I can't wait! PLUS, Marta is coming back for Round Three! She flies in on March 10th to celebrate my birthday and make even more memories together. I can't even put into words my excitement when friends/family come to visit!

I guess that's basically the latest.. No crazy stories for now, but I'm sure we'll have some soon enough. Oh yeah, one last thing.. Justin and I are super-pumped for an upcoming show we're hitting in May. Sleigh Bells!! AUGH! Gonna be insane.

Drowning is Dying and Men Can't Have Babies

Working with kiddies can sure be entertaining. I'm about to hit my 4th year as a clinical counselor, and each year has been exciting, amusing and oh-so entertaining! It's not a surprise that I've met some pretty colorful kids who say and do 'the darndest things'. It definitely keeps me loving my what I do, despite all of the challenges that come with providing therapy.

I haven't been able to do any "letters to God" with my kids, but I came across a couple and couldn't not add them to this post. Plus, I found a pretty intense "warning letter" to someone who had the nerve to push nature aside for TV. Kids are hilarious!!

My mom {still} has a box of funny quotes and silly things my siblings and I did and said when we were little. Back when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, I had to call people to sponsor me for some fundraiser read-a-thon or walk-a-thon I had to do for school. I had my little list of people to call and my little shpeel rehearsed over and over. I called up each person, innocently asking for their money and commitment. My plan was to "seal the deal" by asking for their money per mile or a simple "flat fee". Looking back now, it's comical.. But back then? I was devastated after asking our family-friend to sponsor me with a "fat flea". My little moment of tongue-twisted stage freight has been an ongoing joke in my family ever since.

Like my mom, I have kept track of some of the hilarious things kids have said.

One of the first client's I worked with was a 6-year old who had a ridiculously strange resemblance to a chubby-cheeked Renee Zelweger. He had the cutest speech impediment and for the 2 years I worked with him, he knew me as 'Miss Wanna'. He passionately loved wrestling, break-dancing and mainstream rap music (so wrong!). He was somehow convinced that he had been to multiple movie premieres in Hollywood, as well as claimed to be the inventor of Monopoly. One time I tried to teach little Zelweger and his classmates how to play (even though he invented it..) and I had a migraine for 7 days straight. Another time, we were at the park and he saw an elderly lady sitting on a bench. While pointing and I'm sure loud enough for her to hear, he looked up at me and asked in a worried voice, "Ohh boy...why are her skins so stretchy?"

I worked with another little boy, a 5-year old who was pretty spoiled, but so very cute. He looked almost identical to Freddie Highmore. Not only was he responsible for accidentally locking my car doors - while my keys were in the ignition - with the AC on full blast - but on a daily basis, he demanded his mom make him a full to-go container of hot coffee with cream and sugar (what?!). Working with him in his classroom, I witnessed some pretty funny 'altercations' between him and the boy he called his "frenemy". He often argued about whether or not Spiderman was a "worthy fighter" and the fact that he 'lost all of his friends because he won fourth place in the 'smelly-shoe contest'. He would cry and cry, telling me how "devesmated" he was. Ha! Poor little guy..

One of the most baffling kids I've worked with was a 9-year old girl who said and did some pretty jaw-dropping things. Picture a kleptomaniac, miniature Kathy Kinney (minus the drag makeup). She was pretty set in her ways, as she engaged in different exercises and coping-skill activities focusing on feelings. What makes her happy? Sad? Angry? Disappointed? She answered all of my questions with the same response: Whether or not she got her way. She was a feisty thing when it came to earning rewards and activities. She lost it after I informed her we couldn't "relocate our session to Golden Corral, followed by an immediate trip to Carowinds" (for all you northerners, the equivalent would be Old Country Buffet & Valleyfair). She took her anger out on me during the 12 seconds I stepped out of the room. As soon as I returned, I couldn't miss her bold, handwritten F-word across a picture of Justin and me hanging at my desk. Oh, heyyyo no. Not only did she deny it for 20 minutes, claiming "someone else came in the room and did it quick", but when she finally admitted it, she dramatically dropped to her knees, begging me not to "call the law". Aside from her unpredictable behavior, she gave me quite a few laughs with the bizarre things she would say. During one of our sessions, we watched a portion of Cheaper by the Dozen. During our discussion, I asked her about things she learned.. related to communication, honesty, etc. Of course, she hadn't been paying attention to different communication styles in the movie, but instead she quickly started asking me questions about a scene where the dad was in the hospital for surgery. She began to talk about "his pregnancy" and would have kept going if I hadn't stopped her. Whaat? Trying to take her seriously, I proceeded to carefully remind her of a man's inability to have a baby and encouraged her to talk to her grandma about 'where babies come from'. Bless her heart. Later in therapy, somehow a discussion came up in which she attempted to argue that "drowning was not dying.. It means swimming for a long time".

Another kindergartener who always brightened my day, was a 5-year old mini-me Leonardo DiCaprio. Cutest kid and the most hilarious classmates. His classroom was one of my favorites to visit. One day, they had a substitute - an elderly woman. For snacktime, the sub gave each of the kiddies a bowl of cut-up oranges. As soon as my little buddy was given his bowl, he noticed the woman's wrinkly hands and immediately acted really anxious. With the most concerned look on his face, he looked at me and nervously said, "Was she in the tub too long or was she made that way?!" It didn't stop there. He looked at the woman and slowly reached out to poke her hand, as if he had never seen an elderly person in his life. Thankfully the woman (and I) had a pretty good laugh! Another day, a little boy in his class was talking about his birthday. I asked him when his birthday was, and he confidently replied, "May joonjin in the month-of-the-year.." I asked him a couple more times to repeat himself, thinking I had just missed what he was trying to say. Every time, he gave me the same answer. I sure wish my birthday was that day! Haha!

Just the other day, I was in session with a little, 6-year old boy I work with on a regular basis. We were working on a little craft, when he abruptly stopped and said he needed a bathroom break. After he did his business, we headed back to my office to continue our activity. Once he sat down, he folded his arms and looked at me in all seriousness and goes, "Tell me. Are sweat and pee cousins?" Oh my word! I tried my best to explain (in 6-year old words) where sweat comes from and how the body works. Last year, during one of the days I spent in his classroom, he was "playing house" during Center/Free Time. As I sat at a miniature kitchen table with a plastic piece of pizza and a realistic-looking sunny-side-up egg on my plate, I couldn't help but laugh as he and another little girl aka "his wife" carefully introduced me to his family: 3 baby dolls sitting next to me at the table. I asked what their kids' names were, in which they replied, "Polly, Michael Jackson and Candycane". HA!  During another session, I was with him at recess, as he loudly rallied up his classmates onto the slide. While saluting (haha), he instructed all of his friends to "take a ride on this rollercloaster!" So cute!

As if I haven't shared enough, I had to end this post with a couple videos. You remember "Kids Say the Darndest Things", right? I only remember it with Bill Cosby and it was so hysterical!

I can't wait to have hilarious little kids of my own.. I always tell Justin how I can't wait to actually have a conversation with our kids someday. I seriously can't wait. : )

A Travis Barker P.E. Teacher & Julia Roberts with a Mustache.

It's always great to start working with a new client. Since I began my job as a children's mental health counselor (which I've had, going on 4 years), I have met some pretty interesting kiddies (and adults too!). I suppose I've had somewhere near 25-30 different cases, and last week, I took on a new one.

Usually, the typical process of receiving a new case (especially in-school cases) takes about a week to get everything in order (give or take). First, I meet with the child, their caregiver/parent and the primary therapist. We set up a good schedule, discuss goals and frequency, sign paperwork and plan for our first session, etc. If it's an in-school case, I usually talk/meet with the client's teacher, school counselor, and school principal. It's definitely a process.. Sometimes it moves quick, sometimes it's slow.. all depending on who will return my calls!

Having said all of that.. I was given a new referral (new client). Since it's a pretty severe PTSD case (and in-school), things had to get rolling asap. I found out Tuesday, met the child on Wednesday and planned to march into school Thursday morning at 7:15am. As of Wednesday night, I had still not heard any responses from the school and I was a little wary of showing up unexpected.

To be honest, a 7:15am client is early and I am NOT a morning person. To be there by 7:15, I would have to leave around 6:45am, plus an hour to get ready.. Up at 5:45am?! Ish. Regardless, it's my job, and I love my job. Apparently, the school doors don't even open until 7:25am, and classes don't begin until 8:10am. One of the reasons for needing to be there so early, was to meet my client before entering school, and to help decrease anxiety which has been negatively affecting school attendance.

Thursday morning, I rolled out of bed while it was still dark outside, got myself ready and got out the door. I was running a little tight on time, so I had to move quick. About 2 minutes down the freeway, I realized I completely forgot the paperwork I needed for getting into the school. Great. I had to turn around and get it, which set me back a good 10 minutes. Back on my way, I figured I would just GPS the school address, since I couldn't remember exactly where it was and it had been years since I had been there. After quite a bit of running around and fighting my stinkin' GPS, I learned that it was much closer than I expected, so my late start wasn't as late as I thought.

I made it into the school and went through my usual process of meetting with the front office staff and school counselor. I ended up wasting time twisted around in the school, trying to track down my client (no one seemed to know where she was) for some one-on-one time before classes began. I finally met my client's teacher, who happens to look just like my mom's best friend growing up. She a solid mixture of sweet/southern/momma, super friendly, fun, kind of a jokester.. I'd say a younger version of Paula Deen with the voice of Kristin Chenoweth.

Happy Lil' Paula Deen
We finally tracked down my client as classes were beginning. First class of the day? P.E. (Man! I remember those days.. ugh! Who wants to be sweaty all day long?). It was entertaining to watch the kids jamming out.. They all seemed to really like the P.E. teacher, who was really nice and friendly as well. He was like a cleaned up, Puerto Rican version of Travis Barker..Think Travis - minus the punk, the mohawk and the tats.

Travis Barker

One of the highlights of working with a client in-school, is I get to meet other kids, my client's friends, classmates, peers.. I love kiddies. They crack me up. My client's class is a pretty good size, I can't help predicting what their parents are like, based on the kid's personalities and apperances. You can usually tell which kid's parents are athletic, moneybags, not well off.. I always somehow come up with nicknames in my head, after spending so much time in all the different classes and classrooms. Specifically in this class, there's a withdrawn, hispanic boy who is a spitting image of Julia Roberts with a mini mustache. I noticed another boy who looks and talks just like Jonathan Taylor Thomas (ooh, he was sucha hunk!), wears a gold chain necklace and bracelet, and his outfit was complete with a mock-turtleneck under armour shirt, gym shorts and little KSwiss shoes. I'm sure his dad expects him to be a huge jock baseball star someday. I can tell who the snobby/clique-ish girls are and those who have major attitudes.. I secretly cracked up as a little ghetto-girl whined and insisted on using crutches all day long for a "sprained ankle", while not even an hour later I saw her running and skipping around at recess, showing her friends "super cool gymnastics tricks". I remember being a kid - I miss it and I don't.

It was a pretty exhausting day. Emotional and difficult. It's gonna be an interesting case, though. I'm excited to start making progress.

I Need the Smell of Summer, I Need It's Noises in My Ear

Life has been crazy. I feel like I haven't posted in forev, but that's just the way it goes. Nothing exactly "shocking" has happened lately, but I've been busy planning my sister's bridal showers among lots of other things. I am getting SO excited to head back home for Shower Weekend.. so many people to catch up with and so little time. I am eccstatic to say I'm planning to go to the MN State Fair while I'm there.. I couldn't miss it. I can't believe I'll be home-home in about a week. Eeee!

Aside from planning, I've been busy with my job, getting ready for the new school year to start (started yesterday). It's always crazy this time of year! I love being in the schools though.. especially the Kindegarten class I visit. Oh my word.. those kiddies are the cutest. I closed with a client of mine today, a teen girl whom I've really enjoyed working with. It's always hard to say 'bye' for some reason or other. New clients to come.. Always interesting!

Had a good weekend. We hung out with friends, laughed and watched one of our faves, Away We Go.
"Do you promise that if I die some embarrassing and boring death, that you're gonna tell our daughter that her father was killed by Russian soldiers in this intense hand-to-hand combat in an attempt to save the lives of 850 Chechnyan orphans?"... "Chechnyan orphans. I do. I do."
We went to dinner with some other friends and tried this amazing chili-cheese dip.. Since then, Justin has been trying to re-create it, and so far all of his attempts have been delish! Hung out with Justin's bros, had pizza and champagne. Went to a baby shower and got a new recipe (Eee!). Speaking of babies -- Our friends Marco & Michelle are expecting their little one any day now! Aughh, I can't wait! I hope she comes before I leave for MN.. I don't wanna miss it!
I have to say I'm pretty disappointed that we barely hit the beach this summer, and now summer is basically over. It's still hot and humid as ever, but now that school started, the leaves will be changing any minute now. Fall is the best, so bring it!

Other than that, life has been non-exciting. Justin and I have been facing a complicated issue with his job. It's been quite stressful and frustrating. All we can do is pray and trust God's in control.

Ok.. That's all for now. Goodnight.

You Waited Since Lunch, It All Comes At Once

I haven't really written much about what's going on in my life these days.. Not sure why. I think I keep telling myself it's because "nothing crazy has really happened lately". I guess I don't always have to wait for a "did that just happen?!" moment. Last night, I had the wierdest, most realistic dream. So many shocking things "happened" to me and I even remember thinking (in my dream) how I couldn't wait to blog about it. Whatta wierdo.

Speaking of dreams, Justin and I are counting down the days until Inception comes out in theaters.

"Your mind is the scene of the crime"

If you haven't seen the trailer yet... Enjoy!

I have always been fascinated with dreams related to psychology. Especially in college, I wrote 2 or 3 papers on Lucid Dreaming. I'm not sure if this movie is exactly about lucid dreams, but I can't think of the last time I was this excited for a movie to be released. It's gonna be awesome.

Earlier this month, Justin's family came down to visit SC for a week. We had a really fun time - as always! We went to Folly Beach for 2 days and endured the 100+ degree weather, the guys watched the NBA Finals while Justin's little sis and I watched Lost - she had never seen it before, but is now completely hooked (Yay!). We hung out by the pool, played lots of Dutch Blitz and stayed up late. Our little apartment was packed with people, but it's always worth it!

The Fam (plus one!)

Our friends Marco & Michelle are expecting their little baby Ruby this August, and holy cow time has flown by since we found out! Michelle's first baby shower was last Thursday and I had a really fun time. We chatted and played games - including the common "taste the baby food and write down what you think it is" game..  One of the foods literally tasted like dirt. Oh my gosh, we were laughing pretty hard!

Work has been pretty good. I've been staying busy as summer has begun (began for me almost a month ago!). I have some pretty challenging clients, some more exhausting than others, but I'm enjoying it. I met with a new client I am going to start working with - a teenage girl - who I'm especially excited to start working with. Just the other day, my friend/co-worker Courtney and I took our kiddies to go see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. I have to say, we were laughing harder than our kids were.. That has to be one of the funniest kid's movies I have ever seen. I always like to take advantage of the "Family Film Festival" that is held every year at our Regal theaters.. They show free kid's movies all summer at 10 am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, a new G and a PG choice every week. I had never heard of that back in the Midwest - then again, why would I inquire about seeing a kid's movie at 10 am without it being related to counseling and my job? Anyways, it's been a great tool for therapy. Something kinda crazy did happen while we were at Cloudy the other day. About halfway through the movie, I heard this strange noise in the row behind us. It almost sounded like someone was suffocating or gurgling? Of course I had to turn around to see what could possibly be happening, and make sure no one was dying. I couldn't believe it, but some older woman who was there with a bunch of kids, was head-back, mouth-completely-open snoaring. And I mean loud. Are you kidding me right now? I'm sure it was a nice little place for her morning nap - a dark room, reclining seats... the smell of popcorn? It began to grow pretty irriating after no one around her bothered to wake her or let her know of about the outrageous sound coming out of her mouth. Oh well. Courtney and I had a pretty good laugh.

Other than that, not a whole lot has been going on. My brother graduated from High School and I'm so proud of him!!

My baby brother is all grown up!

My cousin, Dominique Nelson did a fab job on his senior photos (she also took a bunch of great shots at our MN Wedding Reception). I'm beyond disappointed that I couldn't be at his graduation or grad party. I'll see him soon though, along with the rest of my fam, because I finally booked a flight for my sister, Vanessa's, Bridal Shower weekend this August! Wheeee!! I've already started to get plans in order for her lingerie/girl's shower.. I can't wait!

I suppose that's all for now..

Totally loving The Fray ♥

Life is Precious

I watched Precious last night for the first time.

Hoohh man, it was pretty intense. I have been wanting to see it for since it was in theaters, especially after all the nominations and awards it's received. After I saw it, I didn't really know what to think or feel, because it was so exhausting, horrific and achingly emotional. I think it affected me the way it did, because of the children I work with, their families, their stories and backgrounds.. It's heartbreaking. The movie was very realistic to me - I expected it to be pretty heavy, but it was much more than I thought. I'm glad I saw it though. I was talking to my friend (and co-worker) about it today.. She had said she's never wanted to see it - because of our jobs and what we do (which totally makes sense). That's exactly why I wanted to see it.. maybe because I could relate with so many of the cases I deal with, or see the reality in it.

I remember years ago, I read a Memoir by Dave Pelzer called "A Child Called It" --  Another story of abuse and hate, I remember sobbing as I read. I don't understand how these things actually happen.. even to children I am currently and have previously worked with. It infuriates me.

Based on a novel, the story of Clareece 'Precious' Jones (played by Gabourey Sidibe) is devastating. 16-year old Precious experienced physical, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse, is pregnant with her 2nd child and is somehow surviving on just fantasies of courage, happiness and of a better life. It reminded me of so many of my client's cases...struggles with self esteem, feeling angry, hopeless.

Gabby was nominated for an Oscar for 'Best Actress' for her incredible acting and ability to make you feel what you do when you watch this movie. Precious' mother, Mary (played by Mo'Nique - and won an Oscar for 'Best Supporting Actress') was almost unrecognizable. And speaking of unrecognizable, Mariah Carey played the role of a drab social worker, without an ounce of makeup on. The acting was outstanding. I guess now, after seeing this movie, I have an even greater motive to reach out to my clients/kids who are victims and feel completely worthless. As exhausting and devastating and foul as the movie was, there was a managable amount of lightness to keep a sense of escape or hope.

Life is precious, and I often take it for granted. I have it so made, how dare I complain about pointless and petty things. God has blessed me more than I can even imagine. I don't even deserve to be alive. What a gift.

Check out the trailer if you haven't seen it yet -- It's worth seeing, even just for the indescribable acting, emotions, reality and gratitude it brings.

It's About to Break, Break Like a Fever

I really haven't been writing much lately.. Mostly because I've been super busy, and also because I decided not to.

A lot has happened in the past 10 days! I have been working a lot and recently got "the call" from HR at my job. Every year, at our starting date, we have to take a mandatory, 2-week sebbatical. It's a pretty bittersweet situation. No work for 2 weeks. Nice. Unpaid? Not nice. When I got "the call" telling me whether or not I would be approved for sebbatical and a restart date (our program has been on the rocks because of the economy and budgets, blah blah). So yeah! I got the call and it was good news. I was approved, but my sebbatical had to be pushed 2 weeks earlier (April 19 through May 3) - which I was really unprepared for. When I went in to sign papers and finalize everything, I was sent down the road for my very first "drug test". Yeah, strange I know. Seeing as I'm 26 years old and never had a drug test. It was fun I guess (HA!), maybe because I have never touched a drug in my life. Justin asked me that morning if I had eaten any poppyseeds lately.. That would be my luck completely, wouldn't it? Luckily I hadn't - not that I had anything to worry about!

Last week, I basically had to quickly notify my clients and remind them several times, "That's right, we will NOT be having session for the next two weeks." Some of them had a hard time with the early news, and I honestly expected atleast 1 or 2 of them to forget, and come to our regularly scheduled session anyway. Sure enough, 1 did forget (so far) and was apparently waiting in the clinic's waiting room for 45 minutes before calling me, so I could remind them that we were NOT having session. I felt kind of bad, but I guess it's bound to happen.

It worked out pretty nice because my sister, Vanessa (nurse in IN), has been planning to come down to visit with her roomie for some time now, and my sebbatical dates fell perfectly in place. They came down last week and left yesterday. We had a fun weekend at the beach and spent time relaxing and shopping here in Greenville (read post)!

Still really missing my friends. I haven't been home since last August, and I feel like I'm dying of loneliness.

My good friend, Tiffany's wedding is this Saturday! Excited to do the makeup and be a part of her big day. Still trying to decide what to wear. Hmm.

It's been pretty exciting to do more weddings as a freelance artist (versus brides coming to the makeup counter). Aside from Tiff's, I just booked a mutual friend's wedding day for makeup, my sister's wedding is this fall, along with another good friend of mine this fall. Eeee! I haven't even spoken much about the huge opportunity to do makeup (a friend of mine was featured) for Redbook photoshoot - which should be coming out in June or July? I'll definitely be posting about that one when I'm able to talk about it.

I'll never forget the first makeover I did on a woman when I was working for Lancôme (about 7 years ago?). She came to the counter to buy some concealer for her two, very recent black eyes. Whew! I didn't ask any questions, but we ended up doing an entire consultation and makeover, which consisted of her breaking down and crying. Apparently her husband/bf and her were in a fight and he beat the crud out of her. It was pretty emotional, but a great experience. After my first makeover, I felt like I could do anything! I'm really proud to be able to be in the cosmetic world for this long (which has not, and will never include Mary Kay or any other recruiting schemes!), especially without any cosmotology school or anything. I've always wanted to take a few classes for fun, anyway. With all that said, I know for a fact that I could not have come this far without my friend, Misty, who I've had the honor to work beside. Aside from practicing and just playing around, she really did teach me everything I know.

That's pretty much my life as of now. Finally caught up on Project Runway and 1 behind on Lost. Looking forward to the rest of this week and next week work-free. I have a few things planned, so I'm excited! I've been pretty emotionally and mentally drained for a while now, so a break is exactly what I need.

p.s. You should totally check out my friend, Tiffany's (another Tiffany!) blog, In Pursuit - She and her hubby have had some insane adventures traveling to Bangladesh. Crazy stories already!!

Adventures with Fig & Toots

It was so wonderful to see my younger sister, Vanessa. She drove down, once again from Indiana.. this time with her roomie/good friend - Sarah. My sweet sister has managed to come visit me here in SC more than anyone else.. 3 times, including her drive down this past December. Obviously it's a tad closer for her than all of my other friends and family, but it was nice to be visited, as we are often the visitors. Our plan for her time here was to hit the beach and relax as much as possible. They made the now familiar drive from Indie in under 11 hours (with stops, etc.) and we relaxed and shopped before heading to Charleston for the weekend. Of course my life is never lacking in department of "are you kidding me right now??", so I really did my best to get things in order before the trip, to avoid any unnecessary ugh-moments.

Last time I saw Ness was in February for MUSE with my Mom and Lanae!
Rockin' Romeo, desperate for a haircut!
Romeo has been desperate for a haircut. Justin and I have (of course) been putting it off with the idea that we were saving money. And for the record, Justin and I HAVE tried cutting his hair ourselves, and it was a far from successful task. Why in the world is a dog's haircut the same price as a human haircut? Just a thought. His hair was truly getting shabby to the point where he had literally begun to grow mini, puppy dreadlocks. We have tried to keep him pretty groomed & brushed, and the tangles often come out when we give him a bath. But whew, it was nappy.. and it was time. I finally caved and made the appointment at Petsmart with his favorite lady, Jude, who happens to look just like a current version of Kathleen Turner. We arrived at Petsmart, for Jude to give bad news: Romeo had to be shaved. What?! I thought I'd collapse crying. Aside from a buzz, the haircut was miraculously $20.00 more (Typical.). How is it more expensive to shave a dog, versus a time-consuming cut? I don't get it. Thank goodness my sister was there for comfort.. We had a "girl's day" running errands and shopping.. Of course, we had to make a stop in Dollar Tree to see what we could find, and we all nearly pee'd our pants (a common near-occurrence with my sisters & mom) while we were browsing. Over the loud speaker, a fumbly woman clicks on and slurs, "Biff to the front.. Biff to the front.." At that second, Vanessa, Sarah and I all went, "PAHHHH!!!!!!" Not sure if it was the fact she was calling for "Biff" or if it was the slurrish way she did it. Oh my gosh, I had to pretend we were laughing at something else, before embarassing ourselves.. Biff can't help his name! Romeo's hair turned out not so bad.. We call it his "summer cut". To be honest, I doubt we will go back to Petsmart for grooming. Sorry, Jude. Can anyone suggest a good groomer?

We had to drop lil Romeo off at our friend's place that night for the weekend, since we were getting up early to leave for the beach. I had to book the hotel, which was stressful and exhausting (what task of mine isn't??). I booked through hotels.com, which I will most likely never do again. Since Justin and I were going with V and Sarah (better known as Fig & Toots), we decided to save a little $, and split a room with 2 queen beds. Apparently it is IMPOSSIBLE to reserve a hotel room, guaranteed with 2 queens in it. Some hotels.com guy swindled me into purchasing the room via phone, as a phonecall would secure a for-sure-guarantee on a room with 2 queen beds. Liar. Once I booked it, I called the hotel, to make sure everything was set, and nothing was guaranteed. In fact, the guy who picked up the phone was kindof a weenie audit man, telling me we would be lucky to get 2 queen beds, since they were super-booked. Can't anything just go smooth? No. never. I made phone calls back and forth to the hotel and hotels.com people, in which were basically screwed. The only chance of actually getting a room with 2 queens, would be to get to the hotel the second we could check-in (3pm).. which was dead in the middle of our beachtime. Augh. Of course, the girls found a fabulous hotel - the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina for $99 for Sunday night (regularly $299-499).. and of course there were some issues getting checked in, but it all worked out.. as it always somehow does.

Saturday morning, we packed everything up the next morning and left an hour later than we wanted to. We drove to the beach, laughed our butts off while playing travel Taboo and coming up with funny ideas for Vanessa and Sarah's new blog based on their nicknames Fig & Toots. We rocked out to Dead Man's Bones, Surfer Blood, MUSE, Santigold, Jack Johnson and Elvis, and rolled into Folly Beach around 1pm. We decided to grab some Subway and take it to the beach before having to turn around and rush to our hotel.. All this in hopes that Chris, the midnight-audit-man, wrote the special note he promise to give to the morning manager, and we wouldn't have to push some innocent souls out of their room so we could have the decent night sleep we fought all night for. As we were waiting in line for our subs, I began digging in my bag for my wallet. Whattyaknow? No wallet. No wallet, meant no hotel confirmation. No wallet meant no ID. No debit. Nothing. I kept calm, right? Hmm. Luckily my calm-under-control husband didn't fail to forget his wallet, so it was OK. But no ID and no hotel info? After all that I went through, begging for the 2 queen beds?! All I wanted was a smooth, problem-free weekend with my sister. No "did that just happen" moments, no issues. I guess all these crappy details make for great stories, and add some "spice".

Regarding extra spice, I'll take it. But I MUST quote my nail lady, Tina, in one of the most bizarre things she has said to me in a while: "You marrie? I marrie! You got kee thing spice up! You need to keep in tout wit all you ex-boyfriiiend! They add spie to you steak! Spie kee tings intestiiing!" ..Thanks Tina, I'm perfectly happy with my husband's spice.. Thanks for the tip though!

In order to make my next move with my missing ID and the need to check in, I had to go through the process of calling the hotel, calling hotels.com and switching the reservation under Justin's name, so he could check us in. I finally straightened everything out, in time for us to slam into some disgusting traffic just 1 mile outside of the coast. WHY???? We sat in traffic, legs out windows for a halfway decent tan, eating our soggy subs for neearly 2 hours, but continued to enjoy some more music.
Sarah getting on her "Traffic Tan"

Once we made it to the beach, we huffed through roads and roads of traffic for a parking spot, 'til we finally found one. We came all this way, we couldn't just go to the hotel now.. we had to lay on the beach for just a little while. So, we haul all of our towels, blankets, mini-cooler, magazines, cameras, beachbags, tanning oil.. everything. We layed on the sand for a while, before getting sick of the wind, literally had us covered with sand within seconds of sitting on the blanket. Not so much the ideal beach trip, so far.

Our blanket after about 5 minutes.
Despite it being the windiest, sandiest and probably most uncomfortable beach trips ever, it was really nice to get away with Justin and remember where we were married just a year and a half ago. I love him so much.

Happy!
Isn't he cute?
We finally packed up and headed for the hotel. Check-in was surprising simple, almost had me paranoid that something still had to go wrong.. but it didn't. Well.. it did, but nothing major. I didn't realize until we started showering and changing for dinner, but I left my favorite belt at home (which I planned to wear that night), and Justin and I completely forgot our toothbrushes at home. Duh. The hotel should have some, right? Nope. We decided not to worry about it until on our way back from downtown. We cleaned up and decided to do some shopping in Charleston and look for a good seafood restaurant. We headed over to the Charleston Crab House - which happened to be the first seafood restaurant Justin and I ate at during our first trip to Charleston together, right after I first moved. We have eaten there a few times, and the food is fab.

Fig and Toots
Loving the Rooftop!

This time, we were able to be seated on the rooftop, which was simply wonderful as the sun was setting and we treated the girls to some fruity drinks to celebrate their little vacation from lives/jobs as nurses. Dinner was yummm. We spent forever in Black Market Minerals, which Vaness & Sarah hit the motherload of beads! The rest of the night, we walked around downtown before heading back to the hotel.

"I want them ALL!"
Took this picture right as a ghost tour walked past.. Their faces were priceless.
We finally makde it back to the hotel parking lot, before realizing we forgot to stop and find toothbrushes. The girls went up to the room, while Justin and I ventured back out to track down these simple necessities. Of course no one had any. No gas stations.. No pharmacies in sight.. Nothing. Finally at the last shabby gas station we checked, I waitied in the car listening to reggae radio station and Justin marched out, proud with toothbrushes and we got the flip outta there. Later, he told me that he saw some really wierd things in that gas station..like long chunks of hair scattered on the floor and a hybrid crab-shrimp looking animal on the floor by the checkout counter. What country is this!? Who knows what would have happened if I had gone in there with him..

Sunday morning we checked out our of our 2-queen bed room, thankyouverymuch. The beds were SleepNumber, too.. which was good/bad for those of us who didn't really find our "correct number", ended up waking up somewhat stiff. We headed back to Folly, after the girls picked up some boogie boards. It was overcast, gloomy and extremely windy. No trouble with traffic and the beach was nice and quiet. We parked it on our blanket/sheet for about 2 minutes before being covered in sand just like the day before. I could NOT recall a time where it was so windy and miserable.

Ohh what a day!

Wind!

Miserable.

No tan today!
Calling it a day.
We decided to pack up and as walked past some beach bums, they laughed at us, saying we "gave up easily". I just gave them a shifty look and said, "Hey dudes, we'll be back!" The girls wanted to look around the Folly shops, and grab lunch, hoping for better weather. We ate at Rita's - same burger place we went to on our 1st Anniversary - and prayed for better service than we had last time. The food was SO good, we had to go back. Finally the sun came out, and our waitress came to our table. No.. Oh nooo. It was her. Tania. The whispering, awful, disappearing, waitress that doesn't wait on you. On our anniversary, she left halfway through and never came back. We had to flag down a bartender to pay. Kindof ridiculous. This time, we relaxed and ordered.. enjoyed the sun and hoped she was having a better day. Nope. She's really that bad. We waited patiently, befor tracking down some other waiter for refills and the bill, etc. We decided that if we EVER go back to Rita's we will request to be moved out of her awful section. Good luck if you get stuck in there!
Amazing food! Horrible service.
Finally headed back to the beach for some real beach weather, and we layed down the blanket once again. Same windy problems, but we continued to just fight it. Eventually, Justin and I went up to the pier for a while to read. was was nice and sandy-free. The girls heard from some lady that the other side of the pier was somehow noticeably less windy, so they decided to move everything. When we went down to the new spot, we saw people laughing and playing, living it up, and enjoying the beach the way it should be enjoyed. How were we in beach-hell for the last several hours and never imagined it would be a world of a difference on just the other side?? It was literally like out of a movie. We all got nice and burned and joked about Adventures with Fig & Toots. Late afternoon, we packed up and headed to our next hotel (the girls booked) for our next adventure. Once we pulled in, it was pretty much amazing. A four-star resort, marina, with it's own beach. We laughed that the resort entrance was covered in construction, just for Justin and my luck. If we hadn't been there, it would have been flourishing with rare plumerias and flamingos and imported palm trees. Whatever.

After the girls checked in, we trooped up to our room, with all of our luggage, covered in tanning oil. Within seconds of being in our room, the girls inform us that the front desk checked us into a dirty room. BAH! Did that just happen? Yes. Oh yes. Justin and I stood there in the hallway, with a half-ripping brown bag, suitcases, beachbags, and our bodies covered in oil and sand while the girls went back down to find a new room. Meanwhile, Justin was desperate for a bathroom, so I was left to man the luggage and touristy bags and swimsuit attire. I wanted to shrink and die right there in that luxy hotel hall. Some houskeeping guy walked by and asked if I was OK. I told him we were put in a dirty room and my sister was sorting it out. He asked if I wanted to sit in a room while I was waiting, and all I could think was 'that would be great and all, sir, since I am dying to use a bathroom myself, I'm covered in oil and I would love to sit on something other than the hallway floor with this halfway-ripping garbage bag, but I should probably wait for everyone else... They would never find me, let alone in a dirty hotel room that hasn't been cleaned yet.' I seriously felt like flippin' John Candy in Summer Rental. Instead, I just looked at the man and said, "No..thanks." Finally Justin came back with a key, saying he found the girls, and were upgraded to a room with better view. The sweetest words I'd heard all day.

[Just so you know how comical my luck is, as I have been typing this extensive post, Romeo has managed to throw up, my laptop battery has died twice and I have broken a nail. Now I type this whilst listening to Justin and Romeo snoring in a soft sync. I will literally JUST LAUGH to myself and continue on..]

We hauled all of the luggage to to the floor where Justin said we should be, but then he hesitated which room the girls said to go to. Great. We made a guess, and luckily.. oh so luckily it was the one. A nice, 2-queen bedroom overlooking the pool and beach and downtown Charleston.

(Other view from our room)

Ready for more Charleston!
We showered, aloe'd up, and got ready for downtown Charleston take 2. We hit the Market again, where we found some better deals than the night before.. Justin bought me some really cute Turquoise earrings, which I love and can't wait to wear. I helped Sarah bargain with my asian lady friend for some designer earrings, in which she took us to the side of her van for the transaction and mumbled the whole thing.. Gosh. I miss New York. We walked along King Street, had delish pizza for dinner and some fun trivia at Mellow Mushroom, and headed back to Market for dessert and coffee at Kaminski's. Oh what a wonderful night.

Charming King Street

We're not lost (though he looks like it)

Dinner @ Mellow Mushroom, Trivia for Team Fig & Toots!
Back at the hotel, the girls went for the hottub, and Justin and I enjoyed watching some "Buried Alive" show on TLC where people were the most insane hording, packrats we had ever seen.. Like, literally burying themselves alive in their own crap. It was unreal. We enjoyed some delicious Oliver wine, Vanessa brought all the way from Indie and went to bed.

Monday morning, Vanessa had a phone interview with Mayo Clinic (THEE Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN) - a job she interned with a while back and a job that she was given last year. The job fell through thanks to the crummy economy and she was royally crushed. She was given another chance with this phone interview, which just so happened to take place this very Monday. Justin, Sarah and I scurried out to get breakfast and came back to wait down at the resort beach. When Vanessa finished, she hollered from the balcony, giving us a 'thumbs up'.. What an exciting moment. She came down to celebrate for a minute, before finding that Sarah, too, had also been hired at Mayo, and they had both been given their original jobs back. How exciting for both of them!! We quickly checked out and headed back to Folly for one last day at the beach. We celebrated with early pina coladas and Justin and I had a nice walk on the beach. Lunch at The Drop In (another one of Justin and my favorite spots from our Anniversary). While there, I received a the call from my client's forgetting I was off work for 2 weeks. Apparently she had been waiting in my clinic's waiting room for about 45 minutes before calling me.. Felt bad, but there was nothing I could do (post).

Exhausted and covered in sun, we headed back home. We rocked out to old music from the 90's and High School days..."I Could Never Be Your Woman" by WhiteTown, "I Wanna Know" by Joe, a little Enrique, Nelly, some Ace of Base, Dr. Dre and the list went on.

Jr. High/High School Memories!

Romeo was so excited to see us when we picked the little dude up! We devoured some homemade crunchwraps and watched The Office and Vanessa and I looked at our Mom's Mother's Day present that's been in the works for some time now (wink-wink)!

Bring on the crunchwraps, baby!
The next day it rained so we did some more shopping, and I searched high and low for a dang dress for Tiffany's wedding. No luck. The girls had luck though, so that was good. They left the next day after a gigantic lunch and a billion hugs. It was a great trip overall.. So many laughs, so many pictures, so much sun. So many ridiculous moments that only happen because you're with me. Sorry, sister.. That's how it goes. I'll miss you 'til next time..
[See photos from the whole trip!]
